Apple Bulletin Board:

"An 'A-Peeling' Bunch"

Here's How To Make It:
First cover the top 2/3 of the bulletin board with sky blue paper and the bottom 1/3 with green paper. Add white cotton ball clouds to the sky. Create a few apple patterns for the children to trace. Have each child trace about 2 or 3 apples, (perhaps more, depending on bulletin board space and class time.) Also, let each student cut out, or trace a brown basket. You can have the children write their names on the basket, or you can have their names pre-printed and ready to glue onto their baskets to save time. Then, glue a photograph or self-portrait of each child on one apple, and have them write a few facts about themselves on the remaining apples. Finally, place each child's apples in his/her basket. That way the parents and visitors can see the children's faces, and read a little bit about them. Title the display "An A-peel-ing Bunch."
 
* Take pictures a few days earlier to have them either developed or printed out. That way all you have to do is glue them on. I like to use a digital camera because I can simply print out my pictures right then and there.
 
* A few facts the children can write about themselves are....
1. What is your favorite subject?
2. What is your favorite color?
3.  What is the name of your pet's)?
Well, you get the idea....or be creative...come up with your own writing topic. Whatever suits your fancy!!!!

Apple Vocabulary Activities:

  • Write words on small cut-out paper apples.

  • Kids can sort words -- ABC order, nouns, verbs, adjectives, etc.

  • Write apple book using vocabulary

  • Each student creates an illustrated apple dictionary book, each page dedicated to a vocabulary word.

  • Create an large apple make of red bulletin board paper for use as a word wall. Students can add new words they discover throughout the unit.

 

  • Seeds make great manipulatives for counting, skip counting, addition, subtraction, etc.

  • Apple Pie Fractions: Find ways to cut an apple pie and convert into fractions.

  • Dot-to-Dot Apple (1-10)

  • Apple Symmetry: Teach students symmetry by cutting apples in half and other parts for comparison.

  • Circumference: Use string to find circumference of different apples.

  • Create daily word problems using apples as the topic.

  • Map skills/Geography: Trace the places Johnny Appleseed visited on a map.

  • Read How to Make an Apple Pie and See the World.  Then do the following geography and economics activities with the students.

Apple Baking Idea:
Easy Apple Pie

Ingredients per pie: 5-6 apples already peeled, cored, and cut into slices, cinnamon, sugar, 2 Pillsbury crescent rolls, vanilla ice cream

Directions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. On a round pan (preferably a pizza pie pan) or a baking sheet, create a round circle by placing crescent roll wedges with points in the middle.  If necessary, use a small roller to smooth out middle only.  Place apple slices onto the middle of the wedges. Add lots of sugar and cinnamon.  Take outside edges of the crescent dough and fold in towards the middle. Use second crescent roll package to cover the remaining top of the pie. You may have wedges left over.  Place in the oven and bake until crispy brown. Serve hot with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Teachers: This baking activity can be completed in student groups if all ingredients and apples are ready. It makes a great ending activity for any apple unit!
